Katia is a founding memeber of ‘Trio Lyra’ with Alyse Faith (flute) and Sandra Ionescu (viola). ACCOLADES&nbsp; Katia graduated from The Sydney Conservatorium of Music with High Distinction (2022), mentored by renowned international soloist, Alice Giles AM. During her studies, she was awarded the Quinquin Foundation Scholarship for Young Talents in Classical Music (2021-2022), the William and Marie Souter Encouragement Awards for Aspiring Concert Stage Instrumentalists (2018-2020, USYD), and the Bachelor of Music Scholarship for Excellence (2017, UoM). Since graduating, she’s performed as a semi-finalist at The Dutch World Harp Competition (April 2024), and won third place in the BASEL International Harp Competition (September 2023).&nbsp;This July, Katia will travel to the World Harp Congress in Toronto, supported by the Ian Potter Culutral Trust Travel Fund, and the Australian Culutral Fund. She’ll perform a program of new works by Mary Doumany, Natalia Mann, and Lisa Cheney, alongside two of her own compositions. She will also deliver a paper by colleague Melina van Leeuwen, PhD, on Carlos Salzedo’s compositional theory of “New Harpism.” This presentation will function as a pre-concert talk for Alice Giles AM’s solo recital. BACKGROUNDKatia comes from a Croatian migrant family. She started playing harp at the age of 8 with Xanya Mamunya (student of Alice Chalifoux). During adolescence, she broadened her horizons with learning languages, living overseas (in Spain, France, Germany and Croatia), teaching English, and rallying for Human Rights causes. As a young adult, she decided to fully dedicate herself to the harp. Her life experience has been important in fostering her creativity, determination, hard work, passion for music, and desire to pass on what she has learnt to others.COMPOSITIONKatia is currently writing a commission for a 10 minute harp duet with amplification, electronics (synthesisers, sampling, hardware effects, &amp; Ableton), and video. The premiere is forecast for late 2026/early 2027. Previously, she’s completed commissions for Penta Harp Ensemble (“Electra;” a 7.5 minute harp quintet), The Hush Foundation (“Luminescence” a 4 minute harp and marimba duet, 2024), and the AMEB Harp Syllabus (two études for Grade 7, List A, 2021).In 2024 Katia was awarded two feature spots by the World Harp Congress Spectrum (WHCS), for her compositions “Araneae” (harp solo) and “Entwine-Unravel-Renew” (viola, harp and flute). She has also written two modern classical harp books - “Sonorous Strings (for the lever harp),” and “The Sonorous Harp (for the pedal harp)” (2021, rev., 2024).
